Solanum lycopersicum is the common tomato. It has a diploid genome with 12 pair of chromosomes and a genome size of 950 Mb. The tomato genome is expected to work as a model reference for the Solanaceae family. The objectives of the Indian Initiative for Tomato Genome Sequencing at NRCPB are:

To produce a high quality sequence of the gene rich 5 Mb euchromatin of the long arm of chromosome 5.

To process and annotate this sequence in a manner consistent and compatible with similar data from Arabidopsis, rice and other plant species.

Submission of sequence information to an international bioinformatics portal for comparative Solanaceae genomics, to make the information available to research community.

To identify agronomically important genes from tomato genome.
