Since its inception the Centre has been engaged in imparting post graduate teaching and training to students at M.Sc. & Ph.D. level under the auspices of the Post Graduate School of IARI. While the students took up research on tissue-culture based crop improvement programmes in mid 1980's at the Centre, the emphasis has now shifted towards cloning and characterization of novel gene and promoters, development of transgenic plants with improved traits, development of molecular markers for crop improvement and structural and functional plant genomics. So far as many as 74 M.Sc. and 53 Ph.D. students have successfully completed their course and research requirements for their degree programme. |
In addition, a total of 206 scientists of NARS and SAUs have been trained (December, 1999 to March, 2005) at the Centre, under the auspices of the team of excellence project sponsored by the NATP (National Agricultural Technology Project) on the Human Resource Development in the area of Plant Genetic Engineering and Molecular Breeding. Two types of training courses i.e. a total of six long-term trainings for a period of 3-4 months and ten Short-term trainings for a period of 21 days were organized on a regular basis. Out of 206 trainees, 150 were under short term training course and 56 took the long term training course.
